Kenya Floods, Landslides Claim Eighteen Lives as Heavy Rains Continue

(MENAFN) Kenya’s National Police Service has confirmed 18 deaths following landslides and flooding triggered by persistent heavy rainfall across several regions of the country.

As stated by reports, authorities said mudslides affected areas in Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Kiambu counties, where homes were destroyed and residents were forced to evacuate after days of continuous rain.

Officials reported that emergency teams are actively assessing the situation as conditions worsen. Police confirmed the fatalities while noting that rescue and response operations remain ongoing in the affected regions.

According to general accounts, multi-agency response teams have been deployed to conduct search and rescue missions, assist in evacuations from high-risk zones, and distribute emergency aid to displaced households. Authorities are also working on identifying vulnerable areas to reduce the risk of further casualties.

The heavy rainfall is part of Kenya’s seasonal long rains, which typically occur between March and May and often lead to flooding and landslides, particularly in highland and poorly drained urban areas.

Residents in at-risk zones have been urged to stay alert and follow safety guidance issued by authorities.

As stated by reports, the latest deaths add to earlier flood-related casualties recorded this year, including an incident on March 18 in which at least 71 people died nationwide, with 36 fatalities reported in Nairobi alone.
