Protests Erupt in Kenya Over Proposed US-Backed Ebola Facility

(MENAFN) Large crowds gathered in the Kenyan town of Nanyuki on Monday to oppose plans for the establishment of a US-supported Ebola quarantine center at Laikipia Air Base, with demonstrations escalating into clashes and road disruptions.

According to reports, hundreds of protesters marched toward the military facility while chanting slogans against the proposed project. Demonstrators also blocked key roads and burned tires as part of their protest against the plan.

The unrest turned deadly, with reports indicating that two people were killed during the disturbances.

The demonstrations occurred shortly after Kenya’s High Court ordered a suspension of the proposed facility. The center was reportedly intended to house US citizens who may have been exposed to Ebola, forming part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to prevent the virus from reaching the United States.

The proposal drew increased public attention following the announcement of a new American assistance package aimed at helping regional authorities respond to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to reports, Washington planned to allocate $13.5 million to strengthen Kenya’s preparedness and response capabilities in the event of a potential Ebola outbreak.

However, the initiative faced legal opposition from the Katiba Institute, which challenged the project in court. The petition argued that establishing a quarantine facility for potentially exposed individuals could create unnecessary public health risks, particularly because no Ebola cases have been recorded in Kenya.

Following the legal challenge, the High Court ordered the suspension of the project, effectively preventing the plan from moving forward while the matter remains under review.

The controversy has highlighted public concerns over health security, foreign-funded disease response measures and the potential implications of hosting facilities connected to outbreaks occurring outside Kenya's borders.
